When it comes to T1D management, our ultimate goal is to keep our loved ones alive, happy, healthy, feeling well, and free from chronic complications. On a daily basis, Cory and I often say to Eli "just keep it between the lines". We use this term when Eli has chosen to eat a complicated carb meal. We use this term when we are about to administer a dose of insulin (a drug that is necessary to keep our son alive, yet potent and deadly in even minute amounts). We use this term after we are able to recover Eli from life threatening low numbers. We use this term on "roller coaster" nights when we take sleep in shifts because we are afraid to close our eyes at the same time. Yesterday, we did a pretty good job of "keeping it between the lines". Many days, we fail. The word "just" is intentional and ironic because it implies simplicity. Be assured that the process is not simple. It is similar to driving a car, only there are many more variables. A graph like this requires balancing insulin, carbs, activity, stress, BG values, weather, phases of the moon, karma, global warming, etc. It is time consuming. It is difficult. It is not fair. It takes our whole village, including teachers, friends, grandparents, aunts and uncles, cousins, employers, coworkers, and everyone we meet. It is the disease that makes us more engaged.
